Nant de Drance operation entrusted to HYDRO
HYDRO took over operating and maintaining the Nant de Drance power station on 1 January 2025. With a capacity of 900 MW, this giant of electricity generation is one of the most modern in Europe.
1 January 2025 saw HYDRO officially take over operating and maintaining the Nant de Drance pumped storage power station in Finhaut. The transition marks a major step forward for this strategic facility, while introducing a new hydraulic operations group dedicated to this power station.
A smooth transition and a stronger team
The takeover was carried out in continuity with the previous teams, ensuring a smooth transition. HYDRO has absorbed the 16 Swiss Federal Railways staff already in place, as well as two temporary employees. The workforce will gradually increase to comprise21 employees. This increase in headcount is aimed at meeting the technical needs associated with the maintaining and operating the facilities, while ensuring a high level of availability and reliability.
A key role in the energy transition
The Nant de Drance power station, which came into service in 2022, is one of the most modern in Europe. Boasting six pumped storage units and an installed capacity of 900 MW, it acts like a giant hydraulic battery. This capacity enables up to 20 million kWh of surplus energy produced during off-peak periods to be stored for release at times of peak consumption. The role is essential for stabilising the Swiss and European electricity grids, while supporting the integration of intermittent renewable energies such as solar and wind.
Closer collaboration with shareholders
The mandate granted by the Nant de Drance SA shareholders (Alpiq 39%, Federal Railways 36%, IWB 15%, FMV 10%) reflects their confidence in HYDRO. The company’s acknowledged expertise in hydroelectric infrastructure management, with almost 25% of Switzerland’s facilities under its responsibility, guarantees sustainable, high-performance operation. With this new hydraulic operations group and a strengthened team in post, HYDRO is committed to maintaining operational excellence while actively contributing to national climate objectives. The facility will continue to play a central role in Swiss and European energy security.
Already in post at the Nant de Drance site, the team operating the plant has been integrated into HYDRO.
